In a stunning area, just around the corner from the old synagogue in the Jewish neighborhood, you will find Onyx. You first need to ring the doorbell because not everyone is allowed in and once you’re in you will find the ambiance lovely – very retro with some royal elements, lots of mirrors and very private seating areas. The service is impeccable although sometimes you would like some privacy however, I do understand they want everything to go perfectly for their guests. First, I get a basket of bread, which beside the price is already an indication that this is a high-quality restaurant. The selection of bread varies from gluten free to ciabatta, baguette and pieces wrapped with lovely olives and I am telling you this alone is a treat. My first dish is a sashimi cod served in a buttermilk dill sauce topped off with caviar. The presentation is dazzling and maybe I should have just kept looking because the flavors are quite a disappointment. So flavorless it’s hard to believe and even if I add some salt it doesn’t help. Bummer. The duck liver however, is an epic dish. Not only does the presentation rock, served as a bonbon, but also the sweet flavors go so well with the wine served and the liver. The rooster consume is a lovely Asian broth with ginger and lots of sweet carrots, which makes this combination perfect. The venison, which is perfectly cooked is wrapped in pistachio and served with a basket of veggies and mash potatoes. This is what I call a heavenly dish, magnificent presentation with marvelous flavors. The cute little desserts are a ravishing palate cleanser and an explosion of flavors. I grade Onyx with 8.9 out of 10.
