On the most famous shopping street in Gent you will find this stunning venue, Janine’s, which has a very young and trendy ambiance. The seating is either cozy/casual or slightly uncomfortable – it’s whatever you like. The venue is very popular among the youth and therefore always fully booked so a reservation is required. I love this place immediately when I see the price of a lovely Haute Medoc. This is what I adore so much about Europe – that they will serve the most outstanding wines for a more than reasonable price. The service is very nice once you get their attention. It’s always busy here so you might need to call on them. The tuna Tataki is ravishing but the Tuna already has a salty marinade, so the soy sauce is really not necessary because it’s overkill on salt. The tuna is marvelous quality and all flavors are very enticing. The bread is fresh from the oven so nice and warm and served with butter. The mixed salad with feta is really nothing special however the dressing makes up for it. Grenouilles, or frog legs, are a special treat for me and these are ‘to die for’ although the dish would be too salty if you used the sauce. The frog legs do not need the sauce, so I don’t touch it and it is an outstanding dish. The rib eye steak served with garlic butter is magnificent. The well-selected meat is perfectly cooked, and the garlic butter is just right as, once it melts, all the spices cover the steak. One more thing, Belgian fries with their special mayo is always a treat so make sure you order them at Janine’s. The well-selected potatoes are sliced just the right way and shape, then fried in the right oil and served with a heavenly homemade mayonnaise. I grade Janine’s with 9.6 out of 10.
